Generation of quasiparticles by particle-antiparticle mixing and limitations of quantum mechanics

Chang-Hun Lee

The mixing of an unstable particle and its antiparticle has been studied in quantum mechanics in the literature. For example, the standard way to investigate the mixing of neutral mesons and calculate the CP asymmetries in their decays is using the effective Hamiltonian and Schroedinger equation of the meson system. In this talk, I will discuss the limitations in such a standard approach, and also explain how to study the mixing effect fully in the quantum field theory. It will be shown that there exists a discrepancy between the results from quantum mechanics and the quantum field theory, which could sometimes make a big difference in observable quantities.
